The Chauncey Spencer collection is an accumulation of personal materials - correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, sound and video recordings - relating to his lifelong interest in aviation, his career with the military, and the career of his mother, poetess Anne Spencer.

The Children's Movie Posters Collection consists of 51 oversize posters and photographic prints in 5 folders from children's animated and non-animated movies circa 1953-1957. Movie posters feature a wide range of children's movies based on fairy tales, children's literature, and original content such as "Cinderella", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Heidi", "Pippi Longstocking" and Santa Claus, Puss N' Boots and more produced from a variety of movie studios. The posters often include details on storylines and theater experiences. Some posters are sequels to other films within the collection.

Contains 51 oversize posters featuring children's animated and non-animated movies from Paramount, Columbia Pictures, Childhood Productions Inc., K. Gordon Murray Productions Inc., and others. Posters show adapations of fairy tales and other common children's stories such as those pertaining to Cinderella, Santa Claus, Little Red Riding Hood, Heidi, Pippi Longstocking, and more. Also contains eight photographic prints from the movie "Puss N' Boots (1963)" Range of posters date approximately from 1953-1987 with several left undated. Posters often feature different art styles, mention highlights of the movie, and may advertise showtimes or giveaways.

The organizational records include: an organizational history, account books, Christmas bird count reports, constitution and bylaws, meeting minutes with attachments (earlier years are in volumes), membership lists, miscellaneous, newsletters, newspaper and magazine clippings (copies), pamphlets, photographs, programs and property materials.

Photographs and sound recordings of Alston remarks at the dedication of the Robert Hayden Lounge in the University of Michigan Center for Afroamerican and African Studies in 1988. The Center was renamed the Department Afroamerican and African Studies in 2011. A 1988 discussion between Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Alston, William McAdoo, and member of the Bentley Historical Library staff about African American historical material housed at the Bentley. Interview conducted by William McAdoo (1990, includes transcript) relating to the Inventory of Negro Manuscripts project at the Bentley Historical Library.

This collection primarily consists of correspondence of U.S. diplomat Christopher Hughes; his twin sister Peggy Hughes Moore; his in-laws the Moore family; his spouse Laura Smith Hughes (1792-1832); their daughter Margaret Smith Hughes Kennedy (1819-1884); and Anthony Kennedy (1810-1892), his son-in-law. The papers largely date between the War of 1812 and the U.S. War with Mexico. Christopher Hughes corresponded with U.S. Presidents, Secretaries of State, and a large circle of friends and family on both sides of the Atlantic. The papers reflect American diplomatic policy in Europe after the War of 1812, particularly in Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, and France. They also present the lives and experiences of the social and personal lives of women and children who traveled as part of the duties of an American diplomat.

The papers also include financial papers, military documents, property documentation, materials related to the San Pedro Company, writings, poetry, sketches, photographs, ephemera, and other printed items. Among the writings is an 1840 account of a visit by Christopher Hughes to physician Fru Jansen at Catherineberg for health care; 1842 travel writing by Margaret Hughes; and manuscript and printed poetry, including dinner toasts, a valentine poem, an acrostic on Margaret's name, translations, and more.

Other selected items include pencil sketches of four of the five peace commissioners at the Treaty of Ghent negotiations in Belgium, by Dutch artist P. van Huffel, January 1815. The portraits include John Quincy Adams, James A. Bayard, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, and Christopher Hughes (as secretary of the delegation). A lithographed portrait of Christopher Hughes, by Jean Baptiste Madou, from 1829 is also present in the collection's oversize materials, with a lithograph image of "le capitole a Washington" below the portrait of Hughes. It features an autograph presentation from Christopher Hughes to Prince Henry of the Netherlands, July 12, 1845. A group of 24 photographs from the early 1930s depict the grave of Laura Smith Hughes (1795-1832) and the church where she was buried, Bromme Church in Akershof, near Stockholm, Sweden, and a variety of other people and places.

The Chrystal G. Tibbs Papers comprise over a half-century of documents pertaining to Tibbs's membership in various chapters of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and to the history of the sorority at large. Founded at Howard University in 1908, A.K.A. was the first sorority established by African-American women and currently has approximately 250,000 members. The collection's four series contain papers pertaining to Tibbs's personal participation in sorority activities (including those related to her tenure in various administrative posts), materials from several Michigan chapters, sorority publications, and audiovisual materials. In addition, the collection contains work done by Tibbs and family members to document the Powell, Webster, and Winchester family history.

The Chrystal G. Tibbs Papers comprise materials accumulated through Tibbs's participation in Alpha Kappa Alpha conferences, chapter meetings, and special interest groups at the local, state, regional, and national level over a span of fifty years. The activities of Michigan-based chapters are particularly well represented. Materials also include personal and professional documentation directly related to Tibbs and her immediate family. The collection is divided into four series: Personal Papers, Professional Career, Powell Family Papers, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

The Church of Women United in Grand Rapids is a local chapter of the national women's ecumenical Christian organization. Scrapbooks and materials collected from the state and Battle Creek chapters detail the events and customs of the group.

The Church of Women United (CWU) in Grand Rapids is arranged in two series: Grand Rapids Chapter materials and Other Chapters. The Grand Rapids series contains scrapbooks dated from 1925 to 2003. The earlier materials are from church groups that would later become the Church of Women United in Grand Rapids. This series includes a 1951 letter signed by Gerald R. Ford, demonstrating his support of sending federal food aid to India.

The Other Chapters series includes collected materials from the Battle Creek and Michigan's state chapters.

Finding aid for the Cigar Makers' International Union Collection which includes corrrespondence, internal records, and publicity materials relating to the Cadillac Michigan Local 393 chapter of the Cigar Makers' Internation Union dating from 1896 to 1910.

The Cigar Makers' International Union Collection (1896-1910) contains 0.5 linear feet of the organizations internal documents, correspondence, a ledger of membership dues, union application forms in German, and a variety of printed items relating to public promotion of the union. Among the correspondence are numerous appeals requesting support for ongoing strikes to various affiliates, including but not limited to: the Lithographers' Union, the Stove Mounters' and Steel Ranger Workers' Union, the United Garment Workers of America, the Pie Bakers' Union and more. A notable letter includes a union statement signed by P.J. McArdle, activist and president of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers.

The membership and dues ledger from the Local 393 Cigar Makers' International Union (Cadillac, MI) has entries beginning in 1896 through early 1901. Additionally, among the publicity materials are two posters on linen fabric promoting union made cigars to the general public.

The Citizens Committee for Constitutional Liberties was established to work for the repeal of the McCarran Act and other legislation authorizing surveillance of political activities. Records include files of executive secretary Miriam Friedlander, including correspondence with Committee members, other civil liberties organizations, and members of Congress, and drafts of publications, press releases, and speeches. Correspondents include Lee H. Ball, Carl Braden, Gus Hall, Linus Pauling, Norman Thomas, and Willis Uphaus.

The Citizens Committee for Constitutional Liberties collection documents the activities of the organization. The records have been divided into four series: Office Business, Governmental, Photographs, and Printed Material.

Files from CCCL's office have been placed into the Office Business series dating from 1962-1963. These include office correspondence, financial information, as well as speeches given at CCCL rallies by members of the organization or its supporters: Dr. Willard Uphaus, Moe Fishman, Paul Ross, Benjamin Davis, and others.

The Governmental series, 1960-1973, contains materials pertaining to CCCL's involvement with government agencies charged in some way with the enforcement of the McCarran Act. Included are letters exchanged with congressman and senators, including letters from former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This series also contains testimony given by the organization before the Subversive Activities Control Board, information on the McCarran Act, the Smith Act, and the Emergency Detention Act, and acts, bills, and propositions related to the CCCL's causes.

The Photograph series includes photographs of supposed detention camps for foreign-born citizens.

The Printed Material series has magazines and newspaper clippings relevant to the organization and its causes. Also included in this series are Congressional Records excerpts, pamphlets published by the CCCL, scrapbooks, and political cartoons.

This collection consists of 7 documents and printed items relating to the steamship City of Glasgow and its voyages between Liverpool and Philadelphia between 1850 and 1852, including advertising materials, receipts, and a passenger manifest.

This collection consists of seven documents and printed items relating to the steamship City of Glasgow and its voyages between Liverpool and Philadelphia between 1850 and 1852, including advertising materials, receipts, and a passenger manifest.

The documents in the collection include three partially printed receipts signed by the Philadelphia agent Thomas Richardson for freight payments. There is also a manifest of the passengers who sailed on the ship in August 1852, listing their names, age, sex, occupation, country of origin and "Country of which it is their intention to become inhabitants," number of packages or baggage, and number of passengers who died during the voyage. The passengers are separated into those sailing via cabin or steerage, and they range in age from infants to 70 years old. Countries of origin include Ireland, England, the United States, France, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, and Belgium. Final destinations for immigrants include the United States, Canada, and Peru. A variety of occupations are represented, such as farmers, merchants and shipping agents, engineers, weavers, millwrights, and skilled tradesmen like a glass cutter, blacksmith, jeweler, galvanizer, and more. A British vocalist, Thomas Bishop, and Boston artist John Pope (1821-1880) are listed as cabin passengers.

Advertising materials include a November [1850] printed circular sent to William D. Lewis for an upcoming event to "celebrate the arrival of the Steamer 'City of Glasgow,' the first of the new line of Steamships established to ply between this port and Liverpool." There is also an illustrated printed broadside produced by the Richardson Brothers & Co. in 1851 to advertise the Liverpool and Philadelphia Steam Ship Company and the Pennsylvania Steam Ship Company's "Steam Communication Monthly from Liverpool to New York, Baltimore, Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Charleston, Havana, &c., By Way of Philadelphia." The City of Glasgow is listed as one of their four ships, with notes about ship tonnage, departure dates, rates of passage, rates of freight, and additional information about securing railroad tickets to American cities. Printed on yellow paper, the broadside features a decorative border and an engraving of a steamship.
