Edward D. Allen manuscript writings, 1831-1839

1 volume

Edward D. Allen compiled this volume roughly between 1831-1839, during his time in seminary and as a Presbyterian minister. It consists of Allen's writings on temperance, copies of inscriptions written in other persons' books, resolves on the avoidance of sins (adultery, "licentiousness," and others unspecified), a list of books read in Greek and Latin, copies of letters, and his own poetry and prose compositions.

Examples of Allen's poetical and prose compositions include "Lines written on seeing some wood floating in the Hudson" and "Lines written to a sister on her birthday." He wrote about spirituality and decried the "crime of licentiousness," which he saw as becoming more severe throughout society. Also included are several letters Allen wrote to others, including one written to "Mary" on June 7, 1837.

Friendship and Autograph Album collection, 1826-1944 (majority within 1826-1908)

53 volumes

The Clements Library's collection of individual friendship and autograph albums (the ones that are not part of larger bodies of family papers) dates primarily from the second half of the 19th century. The creators of these albums sought out friends, family, schoolmates, public persons, and others to write signatures, sentiments, poetry, extracts from books and serials, personal sentiments, and more. Contributions often emphasize ties of friendship, exhortations to seek love, happiness, or Christian religious salvation. Most of the volumes in this collection were compiled in the Northeast United States and areas in the Midwest, with urban and rural areas represented. The greater number of the albums were kept by young women and the bulk of the signers were also female. Contributors occasionally illustrated pages with calligraphic designs, trompe l'oeil visiting cards, animals, flowers, and themes that had particular significance to their relationship with the keeper of the album. The volumes in this collection are largely decorative blank books adorned with tooled covers, sometimes containing interspersed engravings of religious, literary, historical, and landscape themes. Some include pasted-in photographs, die-cuts, or stickers.

James M. K. Reed collection, [mid-19th century]

4 items

The James M. K. Reed Collection consists of four undated items relating to Reed's services as an instructor of practical penmanship in mid-19th century Pennsylvania. It includes two calligraphic drawings of American eagles, one of which is holding a ribbon and flying above a feather quill. The other two items in the collection are subscription lists for students. They detail the terms for the penmanship classes and list patron names, the number of scholars, and whether fees were paid. One list identifies the locale of the classes as being in the vicinity of Patterson's Mills, likely in Pennsylvania. The other list provides no location, but notes the classes are co-taught by "Reed & Boyd" and includes several calligraphic drawings of birds and a feather quill.
