The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) records consist of materials distributed by BAMN to members at the University of Michigan via email for school years 2017/18 and 2018/19. Topics discussed include Richard Spencer speaking on campus; immigration policies of the Trump administration, especially the separation of families at the US border with Mexico and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); the appointment and confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court; and other anti-Trump advocacy.

The collection is arranged chronologically by when the materials were sent to membership. A handful of emails included attachments - these materials were collected into digital folders by the processing archivist to reflect the relationship between the original email and its attachments.

This collection documents the organizing efforts of the By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) membership at the University of Michigan between 2017 and 2019, advocating in support of Affirmative Action; asylum seekers and detained immigrants at the border of the United States and Mexico; and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) act. They also organized against Richard Spencer's request to rent space and speak at the University of Michigan; the confirmation of (now U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice) Brett Kavanaugh; and the political actions of Donald Trump while he was President of the United States.

The Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office at the University of Michigan offers resources and ensures university policies regarding discrimination and harassment have been followed. The collection contains affirmative action and sexual assault policies, ADA compliance reports, and other administrative records.

The President's Advisory Commission on Women's Issues (PACWI) records include letters, agendas, meeting minutes, policies, demographic information, and email correspondence from the years 1990-2001 as they relate to gender equity and corresponding administrative policy change. Commission for Women (CFW) records contain a history of the organization, bulletins, memoranda, reports, letters, and publicity, 1971-1996.

Affirmative Action Office records include guidebooks on hiring practices, history of affirmative action manuscripts, reports, memoranda, policies, guidelines for responding and reporting to sexual harassment as well as general publicity, 1978-1996.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) records include self-evaluation surveys, building reports, executive summaries, memoranda, and policies as they relate to making the University more physically accessible at all three campuses, 1977-1993.

Researchers should note that the language used in the collection surrounding sexual violence and disability reflects the language in use during the period of their creation.

The One United Michigan records (2005-2006) consist of materials related to a statewide campaign to preserve affirmative action and diversity programs and the fight against Proposal 2, which banned these programs. Records include press kits, conference materials, published material against Proposal 2, the digital capture of One United Michigan's web site, signs, and audio-visual materials including digital materials of informational interviews with people about the importance of maintaining affirmative actions programs.

The One United Michigan records (0.25 linear feet and one oversize folder) consist of materials related to a statewide campaign to preserve affirmative action and diversity programs and the fight against Proposal 2, which banned these programs. Records include press kits, conference materials, published material against Proposal 2, the digital capture of One United Michigan's web site, signs, and audio-visual materials including digital materials of informational interviews with people about the importance of maintaining affirmative actions programs. The records are arranged into six series: Conference Material, Press Kits, Published Materials, Website, Audio-Visual Materials, and oversized Signs.

Susan W. Kaufmann served as the Associate Director for Advocacy at the University of Michigan's Center for the Education of Women. The collection documents her involvement with the Ann Arbor Mayor's Task Force on Increasing Safety for Women, later the Washtenaw County Coalition on Gender Violence and Safety, and her research on the potential impact of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (also known as Proposal 2). The material includes extensive research and press clippings related to the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, in addition to copies of presentations, correspondence, and other material related to Proposal 2.

The Susan W. Kaufmann collection documents her involvement with the Ann Arbor Mayor's Task Force on Increasing Safety for Women, later the Washtenaw County Coalition on Gender Violence and Safety, and her research on the potential impact of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (also known as Proposal 2).
