David Herreshoff (November 21, 1921 - September 21, 2010) was faculty in the English Department at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Prior to becoming a professor, Herreshoff enlisted in the United States Army but was Civilian Disability Discharged in August of 1943 due to an asthma attack.
David Herreshoff was an active member of the Socialist Workers Party in the Detroit area while employed by Wayne State University during the Vietnam War era. A majority of the David Herreshoff Papers consists of police intelligence reports created by the Detroit Police and Michigan State Police, with most of these reports documenting David's involvement in various organizations related to ending the war in Vietnam. The photographs taken by the Detroit News contained in the collection document "a scuffle" involving Herreshoff that broke out at an antiwar rally at Campus Martius in Detroit on August 6th, 1966. In 1969 the Detroit Field Office of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation was authorized to anonymously write Michigan State Senator Robert J. Huber to inform a Committee investigating college campus activity on Herreshoff's involvement with the "New Left" movement at Wayne State University.
