Scope and Content:

The Richard L. Zurel papers, 1897-2011, contain research materials and photographs related to his archaeological work in Michigan, as well as printed materials and minutes of the Aboriginal Research Club of Detroit and of the Michigan Archaeological Society. Collection also contains Zurel family photographs depicting family members, as well as photographs and postcards depicting locations in the Upper Michigan Peninsula.

Biographical / Historical:

Richard L. Zurel is an archaeologist who has conducted research on Native Americans in Michigan. Zurel has taught anthropology at Schoolcraft College, Oakland Community College, and Macomb Community College. Zurel was a graduate student at the University of Georgia where he studied anthropology.

Acquisition Information:

Donated by Richard L. Zurel (donor no. 11246 ), in March 2015 and May 2015.

Processing information:

Elena Colón-Marrero originally processed the collection in May 2016. In 2024, Olga Virakhovskaya and Gideon Goodrich, in consultations with Eric Hemenway (Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians) reviewed the collection for materials requiring restrictions based on NAGPRA guidelines and cultural protocols. During this process, select materials containing specific details about archeological digs in Michigan were restricted. The rest of the materials were processed as they were reviewed and cleared for access.
