Whipple began studying at the Classical Institute in 1855 and began studying at Brown University in 1862. A section relating to composition includes essays on education, woolen mills, California, nighttime, Native Americans, the American Revolution, intemperance, agriculture, and "What the result will be if Fremont or Buchanan are elected."
