Comments on a debt being repaid and the impact of armed conflict on their payment, referencing the Black Hawk War. "This thing of going to the 'wars' does more injury than in basely spilling blood. I, myself, came nigh losing five dollars[.] I paid a man shortly before he started on the memorable Sac war." Attended "as dirty a little trial as is common in any court," with a slander case between two women. "The words charged to have been spoken by Mrs. Cox of Mrs. Maxcy, are not now used in common parlance, but their signification are known to every school boy. They look remarkably bad on paper, & as I do not wish to blacken this undefiled piece of stationery… with such words, I will just say they are names which are well calculated to blacken the reputation of women beyond any others she could have used." Mrs. Cox plead "guilty but justified." Health of family and acquaintances.
