Everett will be succeeding Daniel Webster per the president's request: "The President requested me, the day after Mr. W's decease, to take his place: no one can fill it." A manuscript note by William Bosson (1806-1887) states that the position in question is that of Secretary of State of the United States.

Mentions being satisfied knowing that Charles was able to enjoy a pamphlet he had sent.
