Argues that the Army has a greater right to control appointments and to supercede those made by provinces. A representative from Massachusetts has been sent to the Congress with Washington's opinion to reconcile this issue.

Fragment of a letter with phonetic spellings. Eager to maintain a correspondence "as is Proper to be keept be twen a master and his scholer." Wishes to hear of Shattuck's welfare, wartime experiences, and motivations for joining the army. "Sence you hazard your life as you do I hope it is not for the gain you make nor for the pleasure you take but I hope it is for a grate sence you have of loosing your liberties and properties let a grate sence of the worth of freedom a namate [i.e. animate] you to fightt..." References religious convictions: "If you contend for the cause god I can tel you to fear not but go up against your Enemies he will give them into your hands." Addressed to Reuben Shatlock at Cambridge "under Capt Wells," with a note on the address panel "this with Care and Speed." N.B. Reuben Shattuck served under Captain Agrippa Wells as a Minuteman in April 1775 and enlisted in the army in May. He went on to serve in Col. Asa Whitcomb's 23rd Regiment in the Continental Army under Capt. Wells that summer and fall, before serving in other units.

Includes an exception for weeks with extreme weather, otherwise the lack of delivery would result in the termination of payment. See Clements Library's Postal History Collection.
