"Our Indian troubles are not quitted yet & I fear we will have more than is pleasant to bear, for the past two weeks we have almost been under Marshall law Military officers on the move had orders to press into the service all horses & carriages that were wanted." Possibility of military engagement and Confederate influence. "We are allready immensely damaged by these Indians troubles (probably influenced by Secesh & the feeling is that we must settle it now..." Notes "the terrible conflict" occurring in Centreville, [Virginia].

Letter to the Governor of Iowa regarding public responses to the Sioux uprising in Minnesota. Iowa scouts had been sent to Minnesota; they report that the Indians who had committed depredations have moved Northwest. He has had difficulty convincing Iowa residents that they are not in danger; he believes that one good company of 40-50 men is all that will be necessary to send.
