Maddy
The Maddy sub-subseries contains information on his professional activities outside Interlochen. Many of them relate to his role as a faculty member of the university. Although direct ties to Interlochen are lacking, virtually everything he did somehow involved the institution he founded. The sub-subseries consists of six subsections: Appearances, Broadcasting, Civic Music, Music Education, Publications, Speeches and Writings, and University of Michigan.
Appearances
"Appearances", 1926-1965, deals mainly with his role as a conductor and judge at band and orchestra contests and festivals. It includes both correspondence and printed programs, and is divided according to Michigan and out-of-state performances. Although the correspondence largely deals with arrangements, it sometimes discusses music education in general and local conditions in particular. Since many of Maddy's early in-state visits were scheduled through the Extension Service, researchers will also want to consult the University of Michigan category of this sub-subseries, and for his wartime appearances, Civic Music. For printed programs, researchers should check the Graduate and Music School Libraries (where, according to his records, he donated a complete set in 1940).
