Early Camp, 1927-1945 (mainly 1927-1942)
The early Camp segment, mainly 1927-1942, was created by staff members and professional photographers (who visited the Camp to take publicity and group pictures for a fee). It begins with the construction of the Camp and covers faculty, guest conductors, staff, Campers, performances, buildings and grounds, recreation, and other aspects of Camp life. It includes photos of early Camp leaders Thaddeus Giddings, Willis Pennington, and C. M. Tremaine and performers Walter Damrosch, Frederick Fennell, Percy Grainger, Ferde Grofe, Howard Hanson, Lorin Maazel, John Philip Sousa, and Frederick Stock. Researchers should check the name card index for the location of images of prominent individuals. Photographic prints of the construction of the Camp can also be found Volume 1 of the Scrapbooks. The 25th anniversary pictorial history of the Camp done in 1952 serves as a handy guide to many early events and personages.
