Minutes and reports, 1930-1989

"Minutes and reports" (2), 1930-1989, include minutes and supporting documents such as reports of the president and other officers. The Board met at least once a year both as Members and as Trustees and often created separate sets of minutes for each unit it administered: Camp (1928 on), Academy (1961 on), College (1969 on), and Center (1969 on). Beginning in the 1960's, preliminary drafts of minutes are also included. Executive committee minutes, starting in 1947, are fairly extensive, but the work of other committees is poorly documented.

Maddy began writing his presidential reports in advance for distribution to Board members, a tradition which was continued until Jacobi. The latter made his orally, but starting around 1981, his hand-written notes are extant. Treasurer's reports used by the Board, 1969-88, are located in Subject Interlochen "Financial."

From 1930 through 1947, only scattered minutes and reports have survived. Although the 1948-1955 file appears complete, it was marked "incomplete." From 1956 through 1963, there is a good run of trustee minutes, including some of its executive committee, and president's reports.

From November 1963 on, the documentation consists mainly of packets of materials, including minutes, reports, and supporting information, distributed to board meeting participants. Until 1979, the packets are labeled mainly as belonging to George Wilson and thereafter, Roger Jacobi. Also included are materials (1969-1972) gleaned from the Eugene Power papers which help document the transition from Haas to Jacobi, particularly Power's suggestion for Academy governance and his service on the Ad Hoc Committee and the Trustees Study Commission.

Except for a gap from Wilson's retirement in 1979 until 1981, the packets appear complete. Wilson occasionally made notes in his, and Jacobi included (in the front pockets) his hand-written remarks to the board. The last, July 22, 1989, contains Jacobi's valedictory to the board in which he reviewed his accomplishments as president.
