Writings
The Writings subseries within the Professional Papers series contains a few of Birkerts' many writings. Some of the pieces relate to specific buildings (particularly the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and Domino's Farms), while others deal with concepts such as design methodology and the "architecture of response." Also included are a few pieces of Birkerts' poetry about his architecture, as well as an article he wrote about Alvar Aalto.
Publications
The Publications sub-series, includes source material and correspondence related to two books about Birkerts. Sources Used for Publication, contains some of Birkerts' speeches, lectures, interviews and writings which were used in the production of two books, Kay Kaiser's The Architecture of Gunnar Birkerts and Gunnar Birkerts' Gunnar Birkerts: Buildings, Projects and Thoughts 1960-1985. There are also a few pieces of correspondence which give insight as to how these materials were used in the creation of the books. A few of the materials (noted by an * or a #) can be heard on the corresponding audiotapes or videotapes, which are listed in the Audio-Visual Materials series. The book Gunnar Birkerts: Metafore ed espansioni sotterranee (1988), by Kay Kaiser, can also be found in the Publications subseries. It is enclosed in its original packaging for the Italian market and demonstrates Birkerts' reputation in Italy, where he has had projects in Torino, Florence, Milan and Venice.
