Labrador Study

The Labrador study series includes three sub-series: Administrative, Publications/Articles, and Field Materials. Leacock conducted fieldwork in Labrador, Canada for her dissertation on social and gender relations among the Innu people. Her research took place mostly between 1950 and 1953, but she returned to the topic many times in later years to write articles. The series includes her field notes, maps (annotated and coded by Leacock), charts of kinship groups among the Innu, correspondence, travel and administrative memos, and publications by Leacock and about the Innu. Leacock's dissertation is not included. Throughout this series, Leacock refers to the Innu by an outdated name, the Montagnais-Naskapi. This has not been removed from the collection in order to keep the materials in their original context, but corrections have been included to refer to the Innu where necessary.

The Administrative sub-series includes the materials necessary for planning Leacock's travels to Labrador such as travel expenses, correspondence and grant materials. It is arranged topically.

The Publications/Articles sub-series includes articles about the Innu, either written by Leacock or used in her research.

The Field Materials sub-series includes Leacock's notes, observations, maps, and charts from her time in Labrador. These are arranged topically.
