III. Stereographs

The David V. Tinder Collection of Michigan Photography stereographs series contains approximately 6,900 stereoviews. A wide range of subjects are represented including street scenes, bird's-eye views of cities and towns, and profiles of various industries (especially mining and the lumber trade), buildings, organizations, and residences. Outdoor landscape photographs detailing various aspects of natural scenery are particularly prevalent. The Clements Library has created three indexes to help navigate this series at the box-level including a Stereographs Contributors Index that lists photographers and publishers; a Stereographs Geographic Index that lists specific cities, towns, etc.; and a Stereographs Partial Subject Index that lists an extensive number of subjects represented throughout the series.

Series I of the Tinder stereographs is arranged according to geographic location of visual content, with Michigan counties being the highest level of organization at the box-level followed by groupings based on specific towns/cities/regions/locations, etc. Within each geographic sub-grouping items are then organized alphabetically according to photographers and publishers. Series II contains materials that have been grouped together based on particular subject themes, while Series III contains materials that are associated with particular photographers.
