Powell Family Papers
The Powell Family Papers series (3.1 linear feet) contains papers spanning four generations of Tibbs' family history from the late 1800s to the early 2000s. These include certificates, speeches, press and newspaper clippings, photographs, photo albums, and educational degrees.
The first subseries contains material regarding Tibbs' mother, Maggie Webster Winstead Powell, who became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1925. The second subseries documents the professional life of her father, Robert Bernard Powell, who served as a dedicated member of the clergy for most of his life. The third and fourth subseries consist of materials relating to her three sisters, Gloria Violet Powell Stanford, Clara Margaret Powell Satterfield, and Elfrida Powell Scott; and her two daughters, Nadine Alana Tibbs-Stallworth, and Anitra Powell Tibbs. The fifth subseries contains photo albums focusing on the Winstead and Powell families, with photos ranging from the late 1800s to the early 2000s. The final subseries features Tibbs' extended family members, and contains part of the Webster family Bible.
