Abstract:
Giving news of his actions in California, "this wonderful Country of inate riches, she is not rich in goodness, (that is the poor mortals that inhabit it)." Joy of receiving letters from home, "A Letter is worth its weight in Gold just to cheer ones heart." Comments on his parents' religion and declining health, lamenting the lack of religious services near the gold mines. Describes his partner, who is older, kind, and religious. Struggling with his health but is taking pills to help stave off bilious attacks and believes the Southern Mines healthier than others. Constructed a water wheel to wash gold diggings, discusses the contents of the samples and expected profits, and comments on the local geology and soil. Gives advice on encouraging a young man in business. Briefly mentions wildlife in the region.
