Collection compiled by David V. Tinder of photographs taken by African American photographers in Detroit, Michigan. Photographers represented include Charles P. Adler, George H. Anderson, Virgil C. Davis, James P. Langford, DeMarr Solomon, Alphonse Sparkman, John J. Theus, and Top Hat Photo Studio. Contents mainly consist of individual and group portraits of African Americans. Of note are images of baseball players, boxers, choir groups, wedding groups, family portraits, the Elks Lodge, an orchestra, men and women seated with political propaganda in the background, a graduation class in front of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and a possible postmortem portrait of a small child. Also present is a brief description of early African American photographers in Detroit and an article written by David V. Tinder for the Fred Hart Williams Genealogical Society Newsletter of March 1997, a project of the Detroit Public Library's Burton Historical Collection. Includes 65 photographs. Box 33 x 33 cm.
